HOW IT ADDS UP
How to use the overtime calculator
This explainer uses five workdays and a default USD 20 hourly rate. Enter payable hours after removing unpaid breaks. Choose a daily, weekly or combined example, or set your own thresholds. Choose Custom to change the hourly rate. Use the hourly pay calculator for a different currency.
The calculation
Overtime hours × hourly rate × multiplier = overtime pay estimate
With a $20 hourly rate and a 1.5× multiplier, an overtime hour is estimated at $30. A week of 45 payable hours with overtime after 40 hours would be $800 regular pay plus $150 overtime: $950 gross.
Daily and weekly rules can overlap
The same hour can cross both a daily threshold and a weekly threshold. ShiftSum applies the highest applicable multiplier once. The preset thresholds illustrate the calculation; they are not a statement of the rules that apply in any country, industry or contract.
Keep a record of the real hours, too.
ShiftSum is coming soon for iPhone, with shift timers, break tracking and a personal gross-pay record that works offline.
